About Us

We are an Islet Biology research lab within the School of Medical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney. Our lab is located at the multidisciplinary Charles Perkins Centre — a hub for collaborative research tackling complex health challenges. Our research focuses on understanding how pancreatic beta-cells fail in Type 2 Diabetes. In particular, we study the biology of insulin secretory granules — exploring how these granules are formed, matured, stabilised, and directed for secretion. To investigate these fundamental processes, we use a range of advanced tools including mass spectrometry, flow cytometry, microscopy, and molecular and cell biology techniques in both in vitro and in vivo models of diabetes.

Our mission is to uncover new insights into beta-cell biology that could pave the way for novel strategies to preserve beta-cell function and improve outcomes for people living with diabetes.
